Welcome our new Artistic Director – Daren Beatty

Daren Beatty is a dedicated arts professional, accomplished thespian, and community advocate whose work has significantly helped to shape Wilmington’s creative landscape. His semi-professional journey began on the stage with The Willis Richardson Players, where he developed the foundation for the storytelling, discipline, and collaborative spirit that continue to define his work today.

Over more than four decades, Daren has contributed to more than 20 theatrical productions as both actor and director. His performances are marked by emotional authenticity and strong character presence, while his directorial work reflects clarity of vision, creative intention, and a deep respect for the craft. This dual experience allows him to approach every production holistically—balancing the needs of performers with the broader artistic arc of a show.

Beyond the stage, Beatty has expanded his creative footprint into film, working both in front of and behind the camera. His experience includes acting, production support, and creative development, culminating in a feature film he co‐wrote and directed. This project underscores his ability to shepherd a story from concept to completion while fostering a collaborative environment for cast and crew.

A passionate advocate for what he calls “edu‐tainment,” Daren believes deeply in the power of education delivered through engaging, culturally resonant artistic experiences. He champions storytelling that teaches holistically—connecting history, lived experience, and creative expression in ways that inform, inspire, and empower audiences of all ages. For Daren, the arts are not only a vehicle for entertainment, but a vital tool for learning, community growth, and collective understanding.

Additionally, Daren’s commitment to community is equally central to his work. Through his long-standing involvement with the Black Arts Alliance and the North Carolina Black Film Festival—now in its 27th year—he has helped cultivate spaces that uplift and celebrate Black artists and storytellers. His contributions in development, hospitality, and event support have strengthened a festival that draws filmmakers and audiences globally, creating meaningful cultural experiences rooted in belonging and representation.

Known for his versatility and willingness to “wear many hats,” Beatty consistently steps into whatever role is needed—onstage, backstage, or in community spaces—to ensure the success of a production or event. His leadership is grounded in service, collaboration, and a genuine respect for the creative process.

As he steps into the role of Artistic Director of the Willis Richardson Players, Beatty brings with him a deep connection to the company’s legacy and a shared belief in the power of authentic storytelling. His vision honors the past while investing in the future—ensuring that stories reflecting the depth, richness, and truth of Black life continue to flourish in Wilmington for generations to come.
